What’s A Belletrist?

2,000 “belles-lettres” [French for beautiful or fine writing] are on the Restricted Book Shelves of the world’s dozen leading libraries, of which survived centuries of prosecution, bowdlerizing, mutilation, concealment, defenestration & burning to become invaluable artifacts for scientists.

A belletrist, or rhetorician, is valued for aesthetic qualities & originality of style & tone in spite of the slavish imitation of choosing one genre. Brisk & vigorous, not acting on a principle of religion; an endless voice without sound.

Novels such as “50 Shades of Grey” are an aphrodisiac. Why? They are fiendishly dedicated to the perpetuation of every conceivable variation of vice on peril of becoming a victim of her ladyship’s libidinous craving. An old rake with breath likes a jakes. Only the veriest of grubbians put their pens at the disposal of Venus & Priapus.

Here is an excerpt: “Eyes, the archers of the heart, shoot so many arrows that unless they find some present remedy, your case is no less than mortal.”

The draw is sublimity, propriety & wit affecting reasoning capability in order to define (& thus cater) to the taste of an audience. Power is in the numbers. Numbers to a candid mind affords infinite satisfaction.

After creating indelible waves of success among the public, Pablo Picasso would express among the masses that, in fact, “No one has ever seen an original idea. They do not exist.” Whereas Charles Dickens would contend otherwise, quoted as saying, “Be natural, my children, for nature fulfills all the rules of art.”

We are rewarded to be suspicious over nothing as lost causes are the only ones worth fighting & dying for. We have to make choices & those choices inevitably involve the use of the deadliest weapon issued to our arsenal : the DELETE key. “50 Shades of Grey” needs an X as well as songs such as “Call Me Maybe” or Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”

Under the covers at night, we click “delete” once & again: taking out multiple targets; taking no prisoners. Information is transparent. Information is not power. Secrets are power. Information wants to be free. We are promised jet packs.*
